ICF DEFINITION OF COACHING

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) – known as the coaching industry’s main governing body and leading accreditation & credentialing organisation, setting coaching standards, core competencies, and a code of ethics for coaches and coaching schools alike – defines professional coaching as:


Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.

A PARTNERSHIP

Professional Coaching can be seen as a partnership, a collaboration, between a coach and a coaching client, where the coach uses a series of skillful techniques – like powerful questioning, active (actual) listening, and a variety of coaching tools, exercises and models – to help the coaching client identify and achieve meaningful personal and professional goals.


Put simply, a coach is someone who helps clients reflect upon themselves to identify desired goals, investigate options, create clear and accountable action plans, and finally reach purposeful personal and/or professional growth.

INCREASED SELF-AWARENESS

Coaching provides this invaluable space for personal development:

By becoming more aware of their internal world, clients discover their driving motivations, their true aspirations and self-limiting factors which empower them to move forward and make purposeful changes in their lives. The starting point to making any significant change is...self-awareness. This increased self-awareness can lead to improved self-confidence, higher performance, better relationships, larger sense of life fulfillment and ultimately can generate profound self-transformation for the client.

CLIENT IS RESOURCEFUL

A Coach will not advise or tell their clients what to do – instead coaching relies on the clients’ own resources and pre-supposes the client is expert of their own life and has all the answers within. A Coach empowers clients to feel accountable for reaching their own growth, achieving their own goals and discovering their own answers. Coaching is mainly concerned with achievements in the present and future and has a more forward-looking goal-oriented approach compared to other professions providing self-development support to individuals.

 

WHAT PROFESSIONAL COACHING IS NOT

Understand how Coaching differs from other professions providing self-development support to individuals, like Counseling, Mentoring, Training and Consulting.

COUNSELING / THERAPY

  • Counselors are experts in diagnosing, dealing with and healing dysfunctionalities and mental health issues

  • A client will generally seek counseling to get away from pain or discomfort or deal with trauma

  • Counseling is more likely to involve understanding and working with past experiences

  • In contract, coaching deals more with the client’s mental growth and focuses more on present and future achievements and moving towards desired goals

MENTORING

  • A Mentor is a sponsor, a wiser/older role model, with greater experience/expertise in a specific domain, who supports, guides and advises younger or less experienced individuals in helping them develop in their field

  • In contrast, Coaching is designed to help individuals find their own path and discover their own strengths, skills and blind spots

TRAINING

  • A Trainer is a knowledge and skills’ transfer specialist or facilitator

  • Training implies a knowledge transfer by an expert in the field and corresponds to the process of teaching the knowledge, skills or abilities needed for a particular job or activity

  • In contrast, in Coaching the client is the expert and has the answers (not the coach) and a coach will help clients to learn for and from themselves rather than teaching them

CONSULTING

  • A Consultant provides expert advise in a specific professional domain and helps clients by defining their problems, then formulating solutions to overcome these problems, and can go as far as implementing the recommended solutions

  • In contrast, a Coach views the client as expert of their own life and doesn’t advice nor recommend or implement a set agenda on the client’s behalf

THE FREE 30-MINS DISCOVERY CALL

Start by contacting me to schedule a first FREE 30-mins Discovery call (phone or Skype/Zoom).

This is an opportunity to "meet" and openly discuss the following:

  • what brings you to coaching today

  • clarify what coaching is and is not

  • exchange on mutual expectations and roles for you Client and me Coach

  • review the coaching process and practical modalities (like recommended number of sessions, frequency, location & pricing)

  • ...and answer any questions you may have on the coaching engagament

THE COACHING ENGAGEMENT: START YOUR COACHING JOURNEY!

You have decided to embark on your coaching journey! Each coaching session is a space for you to openly talk about, and share, whatever you wish to talk about and share with me. It is conducted in a 100% confidential, respectful, open and non-judgmental setting. As a coach I will not advise you, nor will I ask leading questions which may bring you somewhere you don’t want. Instead, we will partner on the coaching journey together, and bringing various coaching techniques to our conversations - like powerful questioning, active (actual) listening, and a number of coaching tools, exercises and models – I will help you identify, clarify and achieve your meaningful desired goals. I make sure you leave each session with clear accountable actions & homework for the next session.

An important note: You are ultimately responsible for your own results. Your committment to the coaching process and your readiness to be fully accountable to making the discussed changes/decisions/actions will make the coaching engagament a true success!

We will work around formulating well-formed goals - meaning goals that are desirable, rewarding and achievable for you. We will brainstorm around options. We will check-in on your available resources. And we will make sure you leave each session with an accountable action plan of next steps to implement for the next session.
